Uses
Internet Shenanigans
- Search Engine: Kagi
Modern search engines are really awful and this one is pretty alright. It has a well-tailored digital assistant and an AI-blocking mode.
- Web Browser: Helium
It’s Chromium without the analytics, telemetry, and other cruft, with uBlock somehow alchemically added in. I use Vimium btw.
- Email Provider: Proton.me
It’s a certified boomer classic and it runs phenomenally on every device.
- Bookmarks: Raindrop.io
It’s a cross-platform bookmark manager/memory board with offline backups. It even supports RSS feeds! Pretty skookum.
- VPS Host: Vultr.com
I’ve run this website in some capacity since 2020. Currently it’s on a VPS that runs Debian somewhere in New Jersey.
Personal Technology
- Laptop: MacBook Pro M4
This machine utterly mogs anything I have ever used. The battery life and build quality are phenomenal.
- Phone: iPhone 16
It can call people (!) and take good photos. I use it as my webcam when recording videos.
- Watch: Apple Watch Series 10
I mostly use it to track workouts and listen to downloaded playlists and podcasts.
- Headphones: AirPods Pro 2
These are essential for getting “in the zone” while working, and they stay in my ears remarkably well while running.
Software
- Editor: Neovim
I’ve used this for years because it’s simple. My config is really basic.
- Calculator: R
This is an insanely overkill tool for most math operations, but I’m used to using it. I just fire it up on the CLI.
- Typsetting: Typst
Imagine a system that has all of the power of LaTeX, all of the convenience of Markdown’s syntax, and none of the bloat of pandoc. It even has a musl release!
- Window Manager: AeroSpace
It’s basically i3-gaps for macOS: it adds keyboard-driven workspaces and window tiling.
- Terminal Emulator: Ghostty
Compared to the default macOS terminal, Ghostty is pretty minimal. I use the “Gruvbox Dark” theme.
- File Manager: Yazi
This is a lot like lf, but it comes preconfigured with image previews.
- Shell: Zsh
I’m used to it from Linux, and it ships with macOS. I use a few plugins for better completion and syntax highlighting.
- PDF Viewer: Sioyek
A modernized Zathura with better bookmarking features and live updates. I use a “Gruvbox Dark” theme here too.
